corneal transplantation

corneal transplantation
Corneal graft The cornea is a thin and transparent layer that is located in the front part of the eyeball and covers different parts of the eye including the aqueous humor – pupil and iris. Its diameter is 11 to 12 mm and there are no veins in it. And it has 2 tasks: 1- Protecting the internal components of the eyeball. 2- Directing light rays into the eye and concentrating them on the retina is a hereditary corneal growth disorder and appears as an autosomal dominant trait at the age of about 20 years. This disease is characterized by sediments deposited between the layers of the cornea. Decreased vision is due to the uneven surface of the cornea and the presence of deposits. Collapse of the protective structures of the corneal epithelium leads to swelling of the cornea and blurred vision. Continued swelling of the cornea leads to the formation of blisters and inflammation on the cornea, accompanied by pain and, as a result, corneal rupture. The two main types include keratoconus, which is the most common type of corneal dystrophy – more common in women, usually bilateral – causing blurred vision. 2- Fuchs endothelial dystrophy is characterized by gradual death of corneal endothelial cells. It is more common in women and is not usually reported before the age of 50, and corneal transplantation is the only treatment.
Corneal transplantation is a surgical procedure in which the damaged part of the patient’s cornea is removed and replaced with a new healthy cornea. In what diseases is cornea transplant performed? Corneal edema after cataract surgery, keratoconus, corneal turbidity, talc corneal chemical burns, hereditary diseases that cause corneal opacity or swelling. How is cornea transplant surgery performed? It is necessary to admit the patient to the hospital and send the necessary tests before surgery. Arrangements are made with the eye bank to reserve the cornea. It is done under general anesthesia. On the first day after the operation, the patient’s vision is completely blurred. Blurred vision gradually improves slowly. Eye pain and watery eyes usually improve after 34 days. Necessary care after surgery: during the first weeks after transplantation, be sure to use a plastic protector – avoid bending – straining and lifting heavy objects – you should not bend your head forward – keep your head straight – only The only light exercise is light walking – avoid rubbing your eyes – you can go back to work after two weeks – always wear large sunglasses or prescription glasses with a resistant lens.
