Forearm fracture

The forearm has two bones. In a forearm fracture, both bones or only one bone may be broken.
How does a forearm fracture occur? * Falling down * A direct blow like a stick to the forearm * As a result of an accident
Fracture symptoms: When both bones of the forearm are broken, the appearance of the forearm changes. The forearm is bent at the fracture site, and sometimes the sharp point of the bone at the fracture site is felt under the skin of the forearm.
Swelling and pain at the fracture site: Fracture of the forearm is very painful and movements of the forearm and wrist become very painful.
Treatment: If the fracture does not move, the treatment is plastering from the palm to the upper arm. The elbow is placed in this cast at a 90-degree angle. In these cases, the doctor takes a radiological picture of the forearm every week for three weeks, so that if the fracture is displaced, it will be noticed early. If the fracture remains in the plaster for 3 weeks without moving, the plaster remains for 10 to 12 weeks until the bones are completely healed.

  • Fractures of the forearm bones, if accompanied by displacement, require surgery. In surgery, the bones are moved, then they are connected to each other with screws and plates. After surgery, the whole body is placed in a long splint. The splint is usually removed after one to two weeks and elbow and wrist movements begin.
    Necessary care:
Adult bone fractures usually take 10 to 12 weeks to heal.
  • Avoid lifting objects with the injured hand during this time.
  • After the fusion of the fracture, which is determined by the radiology picture, you can lift the objects with your hands according to the doctor’s opinion.
  • Two weeks after the surgery, the sutures are removed and physiotherapy begins with the doctor’s opinion. You should regularly do special exercises for elbow and wrist movements so as not to suffer from joint dryness.
  • To dry the plaster, do not cover it and expose it to the air.
  • Do not place the plaster on flat surfaces or sharp edges.
  • Tell the doctor about the pain that is not relieved by lifting the limb and taking painkillers.
  • Use a cold hair dryer to relieve skin itching.
  • In case of uncontrolled pain and swelling, cold and pale fingers, discharge of pus, fever, broken plaster, bad smell from plaster and redness, see a doctor.
  • Take your medicines regularly and at the set time.
  • When clearing the case summary sheet, bring the clinic appointment card and, if necessary, the prescription of the medicine that will be delivered to you when visiting the doctor.
  • Hang your hand on your neck while walking.
  • To prevent swelling and pain, place the limb above the body level.
  • Open the splint daily and change the dressing under it and check the skin of the limb inside the splint for the absence of wounds.
  • In order to take a bath or go out in rainy weather, the cast and splint should be covered with a plastic bag.
