Pterygium Pterygium is a pink appendage that starts from the white of the eye (conjunctiva) and continues to the cornea of ​​the eye.
This appendage is caused by the growth of connective tissue and conjunctival vessels of the eye, which may appear in one eye or in both eyes. At first, a person feels the presence of a foreign body in his eye, and over time and progress, the pterygium becomes inflamed and turns red. In general, pterygium is not a dangerous complication, but if it progresses, the person will have vision problems, and in some cases, he must undergo surgery to treat pterygium.
Cause: The cause of pterygium, the main cause of which is not known, but some factors increase the probability of pterygium, including: exposure to sunlight,
dry eyes
Exposure to stimuli such as dust and wind.
Symptoms: burning sensation in the eye, tingling sensation in the eye, presence of a foreign body in the eye and redness of the eye. If the pterygium is stretched over the cornea, it causes blurred vision and diplopia.
Treatment: If you have any symptoms of pterygium, see a doctor immediately. The doctor starts the treatment by performing examinations and diagnosing pterygium. which includes artificial tear drops to keep the eyes moist, eye drops to improve redness and inflammation, prescribing steroid drops to reduce itchy redness, swelling and eye pain. If there is no timely treatment and the disease progresses, the patient will undergo surgery according to the doctor’s order.
Ways to prevent pterygium: If you live in tropical areas and are exposed to sunlight for a long time, wear sunglasses even on cloudy days. Wear a brimmed hat and keep your eyes moist with artificial tears.
